Computer Ergonomics
A very important health concern today is computer workstation ergonomics. When we hold odd positions over prolonged periods of time, the tissues of our bodies actually begin to adapt to these positions. (Visco-elastic deformation of tissues) On the job injury costs have soared and businesses have just begun to recognize the problem. One way to tackle this problem is proper computer ergonomics.
With proper computer ergonomics, the employee is more productive and in better health its just that simple. This can not only slow the process in patients with existing conditions but also prevent neck and upper back issues from developing in healthy workers.
If you sit at a computer all day, you need a chair that slants forward, ideally with your knees slightly below the buttock to best support the lumbar curve.
Your monitor should be placed high (the bottom third of your screen at eye level) to avoid injuring your cervical curve. The one caveat, your monitor should not be so high that you are staring into bright lights as this can cause eye strain.
The keyboard should placed at a level to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome which should be with your elbows at approximately ninety degrees and supported comfortably. Your wrists should be in a neutral position neither bent up or down.
You should consider using one of the ergonomic keyboards such as the Microsoft natural.These have some built in features that are really helpful including adjustments to accommodate varying keyboard heights.
Never EVER hold the phone to your ear using your shoulder and your neck. Get yourself a headset or bluetooth device.
